Characteristics

  • Color: The heartwood is a light to medium reddish-brown or pinkish-tan, with a lighter, sometimes white, sapwood. The color deepens slightly over time with exposure to light.

  • Grain: Features a distinct, coarse, and open grain pattern that is more prominent than white oak. Plain-sawn boards often display a noticeable "cathedral" or "flared" pattern, while quarter-sawn boards show a "flake" or "tiger ray" effect.

  • Versatility: Highly versatile for interior use, valued for its strength, durability, and ability to take stains and finishes well. It is widely used for:

  • Hardness : It has a Janka hardness rating of 1,290 pounds-force (lbf), a solid balance of durability and workability. This makes it resistant enough for daily wear in residential settings but still easy to machine and work with tools.
